Gibraltar started the game looking to contain their Georgian hosts, who right from the off, were determined to ensure they left the Boris Paichadze Dinamo Arena with all three points.
Head coach Julio Ribas had selected a similar team as in the opening game in Group D, at the Victoria Stadium in March against the Republic of Ireland – with Louie Annesley anchoring the midfield and Lee Casciaro and Anthony Hernandez providing the support for Tjay De Barr from the flanks.
Gibraltar’s resistance lasted until the half hour mark. Valerian Gvilia skipped through the Gibraltar defence and finished past Goldwin in goal. 1-0 to the hosts but Gibraltar were very much in the game.
Then came the crucial moment in the game for Julio Ribas’ Gibraltarian Warriors. A free kick on the edge of the Georgian box saw Liam Walker collect the ball and mark out his customary run up. His sweet left foot curled the free kick over the Georgian wall and looked to be nestling in the top corner only for the outstretched arm of Giorgi Loria, the Georgian stopper to get his finger tips to the ball and tip it past the post and out of harms way. A wonder save was the difference between the two sides at half time.
No changes at half time. The score line was to remain the same with Gibraltar holding their own until Giorgi Papunasvili rifled in a second past Goldwin.
Then in the 76thminute the unfortunate Gibraltar Captain Roy Chipolina was adjudged to have handled inside his own box, Penalty to the home side. Vato Arveladze made no mistake from the spot and killed the game off at 3-0.
Gibraltar’s National team now pick themselves up and head to Dublin directly tomorrow to face the Republic of Ireland on Monday evening at the Aviva Stadium in their third Euro 2020 European Qualifier.
